Cooler temperatures and unsettled weather will continue today to end the workweek and start the weekend.

Here are your weather headlines for Friday, March 27, 2015...

Seasonable but Unsettled

As expected, high temperatures on Thursday reached well into the 60s for most of New Jersey. It really did feel like Spring!

A cold front passed through the state late Thursday night, and so temperatures will take a dip Friday, only topping out around 50°. That’s not terrible - just a bit below normal for late March (normal high is 55° for today).

The other issue today is the continued unsettled weather, as rain continues. A disturbance riding along that front (now off-shore) is pushing another round of moderate to heavy rain through the state this morning. In North Jersey (Sussex, Warren, and Morris counties), we’ve had a few reports of snow and sleet. Some models actually keep the rain over coastal and southern New Jersey through at least the middle of the afternoon. So grab that umbrella this morning, as we’ll see periods of rain all day, especially south and east of the NJ Turnpike. North Jersey looks to dry out a bit this afternoon, but skies will likely remain mostly cloudy through tonight.

Several times this winter, we’ve had to keep a sharp eye on temperatures after heavy rain, in case of a “flash freeze” event. Low temperatures will only drop into the lower 30s tonight. That should be light enough of a freeze (only a few hours) such that residual water on roads and sidewalks does not quickly turn to ice overnight. Still, it would be wise to be vigilant early Saturday morning in case there are some slick spots.

Snowflakes This Weekend

Saturday will be cloudy and cool, with high temperatures only in the lower 40s. As a weak disturbance makes a fly-by, we could very well see some snowflakes and/or raindrops during the day. Don’t panic, winter-haters... I don’t expect any more than a dusting to maybe a half-inch on the ground by the end of the day. Still, given the snow, clouds, and cool temperatures, Sunday looks to be the better day of the weekend.

Temperature Trend

Even though I claim Sunday will be the top weather day of the weekend, temperatures will remain well below average, ranging from 40° to 45°. We’ll actually warm up a bit on Monday, into the 50s despite rain showers. And it looks like 50s will be the status quo for Tuesday and Wednesday next week, and we might even bump up to about 60° by Thursday.

Have a great weekend!
