Ventnor Man Sentenced to 70 Years in State Prison For 2006 Murder

A man from Ventnor has been sentenced to 70 years in state prison following a fatal shooting in Atlantic City in 2006.

In the early morning hours of December 29, 2006, Atlantic City police responded to a parking lot on New York Avenue in the city for a report of a shooting. When they arrived, they found Jerrod Moss shot in the head; he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following a six-year investigation, 37-year-old Laquay Williams was served with an arrest warrant in connection with the shooting. The warrant was served at a state prison in Trenton where Williams was serving a sentence on an unrelated matter.

Earlier this year, Williams found guilty on first degree murder charges and three weapons charges. During the trial, Assistant Prosecutor Richard McKelvey, who represented the State in the case, said in his closing remarks that Williams, “had the audacity to commit a murder in front of everyone,” and that “he killed because he thought he could get away with it. Because the code of the streets would protect him.” On Thursday, Williams was sentenced to 70 years in state prison; he must serve at least 58 years before being eligible for parole.
