A new survey of drivers across the country purports to show the states with the most discourteous motorists.

"We asked 2,000 drivers nationwide to tell us who the rudest drivers are that they have encountered, based on license plates," said Amy Danise, editorial director of Insure.com.

Drivers defined "rude" as: using cellphones while driving, tailgating, not using turn signals, weaving between lanes and driving too fast.

"I think it's generally impatience of other drivers," Danise said.

Believe it or not, the poll found Idaho drivers to be the worst, followed by those in Washington, D.C. New Yorkers were third, and New Jersey? Eighth-most rude in the country, according to this survey.

The full Top 10:

  1. Idaho
  2. Washington, D.C.
  3. New York
  4. Wyoming
  5. Massachusetts
  6. Delaware (tie)
  7. Vermont (tie)
  8. New Jersey
  9. Nevada
  10. Utah

While most of the Eastern locales boast population-dense, urban centers, Idaho is relatively sparse, perhaps making it a surprising choice for the top spot.

One feature of the survey was a question that asked motorists about the rudest drivers from neighboring states. In that case, New Yorkers found New Jersey drivers were the most rude.

California drivers, though, were the No. 1 haters of drivers from nearby states. They named neighbors from Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, Oregon and Utah in addition to people in some more distant locations, like Arkansas, New York, Texas and Vermont.
