A South Jersey woman has been sentenced to over half-a-century in prison for the murder and dismemberment of her husband.

63-year-old Loretta Doyle Burroughs of Ventnor was sentenced to 55 years in prison Wednesday for the 2007 stabbing death of her husband, 66-year-old Daniel Burroughs, and for concealing evidence in the crime. Police say she kept the dismembered parts of her husband in Tupperware containers for 6 years. A police investigation in 2013 led to the discovery of the body parts in a a closet in her home.

Daniel Burroughs was first reported missing to Hamilton Township police in September, 2007. After that report, Daniel's wife, Loretta, moved to a home in Ventnor and then moved again to Villas. In May, 2013, two search warrants were executed at those homes. Inside the Ventnor home, a search team found decomposing human remains inside several plastic storage containers in a closer. Those remains were identified as those of Daniel Burroughs. Loretta Burroughs was arrested that day and later indicted for the murder.

In a statement, prosecutors argued for life in prison, saying,

the depraved and heinous nature of her crimes...where she not only brutally stabbed her own husband to death, but then, in horrific fashion, she immediately took a serrated knife and dismembered his body, then placed him in some old storage containers and left him to rot for 6 years...She deserves to spend the rest of her life in prison, and Danny Burroughs’ family and friends deserve justice, knowing that they never have to worry about her getting out of prison. Her actions are unimaginable, the stuff of nightmares and horror movies. There is no place for this violent behavior, or for this defendant, in society.

On Wednesday, Loretta Burroughs was sentenced to 55 years in state prison. Burroughs will be 110 years old before being eligible for parole.
