A cold front will have noticeable effects on New Jersey's weather over the next few days, with a round of rain Friday and cooler temperatures for the weekend.

Here are your weather headlines for Friday, October 9, 2015...

Evening Showers and Thunderstorms

On paper, Friday is a pretty busy weather day for New Jersey... Starting with fog... Then a stiff breeze picks up... Temperatures will be fairly warm (75° to 80°)... Humidity will be fairly high...

The big story today will be incoming rain, as a cold front approaches New Jersey. While we could see an isolated shower at any time through the morning and afternoon, the far better chance for widespread rain will be from late afternoon through this evening. To be safe, I'm ramping rain chances for the 2 p.m. to 2 a.m. time frame. The heaviest, steadiest rain will likely coincide with Friday evening's commute - in the 5 p.m to 8 p.m window.

Given today's warmth and humidity, our atmosphere will be marginally unstable, so you'll probably hear some rumbles of thunder with along with the rain. We could even have a gusty wind or a heavy downpour embedded as well. While the Storm Prediction Center has put New Jersey in a "Marginal Risk" of severe weather for today, I don't expect anything too ominous or too widespread today or tonight. Just be ready for a couple hours of potentially heavy rain.

Lingering showers will remain possible through the early morning hours of Saturday. Overall rainfall totals will likely be around a half-inch, with upwards of an inch of rain where the heaviest rain falls.

Cooler Temperatures

As I mentioned, the rain will be spawned by a front - the leading edge of cooler, more autumn-like air. We will start to feel this cool down on Saturday. As skies clear to partly sunny and winds calm throughout the day, high temperatures will only climb to the lower to mid 60s. That is about 5 degrees below normal for early-mid October.

Furthermore, we may very well see some of the chilliest temperatures of the season early Sunday morning, as lows plunge into the 40s throughout the state. There could be a few upper 30s in northwest New Jersey... And if the temperature falls to about 37°, we may experience the first frost of the season too.

The Rest of the Holiday Weekend

Thanks to plentiful sunshine, high temperatures on Sunday will recover nicely to the seasonable 70 degree mark. For Columbus Day Monday, New Jersey will enjoy mostly sunny skies and even warmer temperatures, with highs in the mid 70s.

Our next chance for rain will come in the neighborhood of Tuesday next week, but the timing and exact impacts are still muddled for now.
