Distribution of the 115,000 seedings began Saturday and will continue through April. Interested municipalities registered for the free program last month, and they will distribute their seedlings to residents.

“Superstorm Sandy’s winds toppled a staggering number of trees in towns across the state, and not just the counties that were hardest hit by the storm,” said Bob Martin, head of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. “Through this campaign, residents can replant trees where it means the most to them—right in their backyard.”

Residents are being reminded that seedlings may stand no more than knee-high when distributed, but their full size could get in the way of power lines and other structures if not planted wisely.
