Right place, right time: 2 Berlin, NJ, cops save trapped 75-year-old woman from burning car

Two police officers in Camden County just happened to be at the right place at the right time Tuesday and they saved a 75-year-old woman from a burning car.

The scene unfolded around 2:45 Tuesday afternoon, April 9th, when Lt. Joshua Smith and Sgt. Eric Wolf with the Berlin Police Department were at the corner of South Franklin Avenue and the White Horse Pike conducting a school crossing post detail.

While they were out, the department says the pair noticed a 2003 Buick stopped in traffic at North Franklin and Maple Avenues and they saw signs of smoke coming from the engine.

As they approached, the vehicle began to smoke heavily and the engine quickly became engulfed in fire.

Officers then noticed the driver, a 75-year-old woman, was trapped inside and quickly becoming surrounded by smoke and flames.

Smith and Wolf, "took quick action and were able to extract the female from the vehicle and move her to safety," according to the department.

The driver was taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The Berlin Fire Department responded to the scene and extinguished the fire.
