According to Brick Township Police, three juvenile girls from Brick were taken into custody and charged with assault in connection with the April 18 incident.

Sgt. Neal Pedersen said in a statement that police responded to the 500-block of Colorado Avenue at about 7 p.m. after receiving reports of a fight. When authorities arrived, they learned that the victim, whose name and age have not been released, had allegedly been assaulted by three other girls in Herbertsville Park.

The victim suffered serious injuries to her nose and right eye and was taken to Ocean Medical Center by her mother, according to police.

"This injury ended up being significant and requiring surgery," Pedersen said in a statement.

During the course of an initial investigation, police learned that the three suspects had allegedly "fled the park into the woods that lead to the Greenwood Loop neighborhood," police said.

Detectives Thomas Cooney, Kenneth Steinberg, and Timothy McCarthy began searching for the suspects.

"Over the next two days, the detectives were able to identify three suspects and place them into custody," Pederson said.

The three female suspects were taken into custody and later released to their parents. The case was transferred to Ocean County Family Court due to the ages of the suspects, police said. Their identities have not been released.
