Even though Wednesday’s high temperatures will end up about 5° below normal, real springtime warmth ensues for the rest of the week.

Here are your weather headlines for Wednesday, April 1, 2015...

Welcome to April

We’re really diving into the heart of the spring season as April begins today, and the weather will actually respond accordingly (see below).

Normal high temperatures in April rise from about 56° today to 66° at the end of the month. Normal lows increase from 37° to 49° by May. Meanwhile, total monthly precipitation averages 4.20” in Newark, the 2nd wettest month of the year. Normal precipitation in Atlantic City is 3.63”, the 5th wettest month of the year. And yes, it can still snow a little bit... April’s average monthly snowfall is 0.9” and 0.3” at Newark and Atlantic City, respectively.

Warming Trend

For those hungry for some springtime temperatures and sunshine, the next couple days will be a welcome sight. Temperatures today will actually end up 5 or 6 degrees below normal for early April. But the abundant sunshine today (especially in Central and South Jersey) will make up for the coolness.

A brisk southwest wind will pick up on Thursday, gusting over 20 mph. That will be a warming wind and, along with partly sunny skies, will help temperatures climb into the lower to mid 60s. A great day overall, and it should be a great excuse to open up the windows and enjoy the warm breeze.

It will still be quite warm on Friday, with temperatures potentially approaching 70°. But there is a catch...

Next Rainy Day

In addition to the warmth, Friday will also bring our next chance for rain... and it could be a washout. A slow-moving front will approach New Jersey early Friday morning, and won’t actually move through until Saturday. With that boundary in the neighborhood, and as impulses ride northward along the front, we are going to get hit with some periods of potentially heavy rain all day Friday. The rain will likely start by 5 a.m. on Friday morning and won’t end completely until the front passes about 24 hours later. And, with the warmth and instability in the atmosphere, a few rumbles of thunder and some gusty winds should be expected as well.

The upcoming holiday weekend looks cooler, with highs scaling back to the lower to mid 50s. Showers will end Saturday morning and, with the exception of a slight shower chance on Sunday, fair weather looks likely for the rest of the weekend.
